SIOR Service Day began as an opportunity to honor SIOR’s history of servant leadership, inspired by one of its core founding principles – to serve the greater good. Founded in 1941, SIOR was born from the government’s need to quickly acquire warehouses and factories to produce supplies for the war effort during World War II.  The government turned to a trusted group of industrial real estate practitioners who embarked on what was perhaps the single most important commercial real estate assignment in the history of our nation. May 8 marks the day that World War II ended in Europe. SIOR Service Day encourages members across the globe to give back to their communities through events organized by their local chapters.

The past two years have shown that service can’t be confined to just one day, so this year, the SIOR New England Chapter is dedicating the month of May as Service Month.  The following are some ideas you and your family can use to help boost May as Service Month.

  • Help your local food pantry stock shelves
  • Collect non-perishable food items
  • Volunteer at your local library
  • Collect books
  • Volunteer at your local pet shelter
  • Collect pet food, unused towels, blankets, and other linens
  • Help an elderly neighbor spring clean their yard
  • Take a CPR course
  • Organize a group to walk the main streets of your town to pick up trash
  • Host a bike swap / give-a-way with bikes kids have outgrown
  • Bake cookies and write letters to Seniors in care facilities

Hopefully, you can find something fun you can do with your family.  Helping the community doesn’t have to involve a lot of time and/or money.
